How to Teach the Voiced / Unvoiced Distinction
English digraph th is unique among early phonics skills because one spelling represents two separate sounds. Teach learners to touch their throat:
- Unvoiced /θ/: Cool air blows through the teeth. Throat remains still and silent (thin, math, moth, bath, path).
- Voiced /ð/: Vocal cords buzz and vibrate like a bee (this, that, them, then, than).
