Teaching the CK Digraph
The consonant digraph ck is one of the most reliable spelling patterns in English. When teaching this pattern:
- Emphasize the Single Sound: Remind students that we don't say /k/ ... /k/; the two letters team up to make one crisp /k/ sound.
- Highlight the Preceding Vowel: Have students notice that in this beginner set, ck comes after a short vowel at the end of a one-syllable word (pack, neck, kick, rock, duck, sock).
- Three Sounds in Every Word: Even though these words have 4 or 5 letters, every single one of them has exactly 3 Elkonin sound boxes!
